About Wendy:
"I have been involved in Mexico for years and enjoyed watching the ladies make clay pots." Why do you buy handmade pottery? "I think it is unique and I enjoy the more natural designs and shapes, as well as coloring they take on when fired. I also enjoy knowing the artist and supporting their business." "I have a small collection of Lisa['s pottery], as well as several pieces of clay pottery from Mexico." How did you acquire a Lisa York piece of pottery? "I bought some directly from Lisa at her studio." To read other stories about reasons to buy handmade by clicking here.
Do you collect pottery?
"I always have to buy at least one pot whenever I go to a show or festival. I used to collect mugs, then serving bowls, and now I’m working on my plate collection!" How did you acquire a Lisa York piece of pottery? "A few years ago when Lisa dropped off pots for the gallery, I unwrapped a serving bowl that was so beautiful I immediately had to buy it for myself! I love Lisa’s glazing style and the size and shape were perfect for my collection. It usually holds strawberries or other fruit, and is also perfect for a big bowl of pho!" He is a Studio potter, Community Studio, and Gallery Owner. "I own a lot of pottery from many artists and potters with a few favorites!" Why do you buy handmade pottery? "All of the pottery I own is put to use, I have very few non-functional pieces. One of my favorite experiences is to serve a buffet style meal and just have the pottery from several different makers available. It’s fun to watch everyone select what they want to eat off of and what they want to drink from. The meal becomes an experience!" How did you acquire a Lisa York piece of pottery? "I got a few of my Lisa York pieces from The Front Porch Gallery at Washington Street Studios in Harpers Ferry, WV, and I got a piece from The Room Show at NCECA in 2018." About Denise: She is an adjunct Professor at Wilson College, and decorates her functional ware with organic, inlaid designs that bleed into atmospheric surfaces. She has a pottery collection. Why do you buy handmade pottery? "I love objects made for use and admire good craftsmanship. Skill is required to make an object both beautiful and functional. The infinite variations possible for a single object still amazes me. I have a number of Lisa York originals including a lunch plate, tumbler, vase, and an early cup from her graduate student days. Her work always brightens the room and lightens my mood as I can’t help but smile when I think of Lisa’s warm, caring personality and her great smile. I have a variety of pieces in my collection. The ones that mean the most are typically the ones I acquire directly from the maker, and ideally, I have some connection with them. Over time, it’s like having lunch with a friend, even when you’re alone."
