Why do you buy handmade pottery?
"Every piece of pottery has its own story, and speaks to the user in its own way. I tend to look for a pot that is inspiring to me, whether through the shape/style of the pot itself or through admiration of the artist who made it. I love being reminded of the story behind the piece every time I use it. I also love seeing friends use my pottery collection and hearing the stories it brings up for them!"
Do you collect pottery?
"I always have to buy at least one pot whenever I go to a show or festival. I used to collect mugs, then serving bowls, and now I’m working on my plate collection!"

How did you acquire a Lisa York piece of pottery?
"A few years ago when Lisa dropped off pots for the gallery, I unwrapped a serving bowl that was so beautiful I immediately had to buy it for myself! I love Lisa’s glazing style and the size and shape were perfect for my collection. It usually holds strawberries or other fruit, and is also perfect for a big bowl of pho!"

Kiln Shelf Review: What Kiln Shelves are Best for Soda Firing?

6/6/2019

Picture

Types of Kiln Shelves:
  1. High Alumina Clay
  2. Silicon Carbide
  3. Advancer or Thermal-lite
High alumina clay kiln shelves are my favorite for soda firing.
  • No kiln shelf drips on your ceramic pieces
Picture

Caution:
  • High clay alumina kiln shelves have a shorter life span than silicon carbide kiln shelves.
  • Order extras and retire kiln shelves early. (Hood College has successfully fired some of their kiln shelves 30ish times.)
  • Shelves that are a darker orange have been fired more times (See image on left).
  • Order 1 inch thick shelves. While heavier they last longer.
Picture
Disadvantage of Silicon Carbide Kiln Shelves:
  • Silicon Carbide drips (They can drip down and crawl up a pot, see image on left.)
  • Cause: soda fluxes out the silicon carbide shelf.
  • Note: they vary in quality. nitrite bonded silicon carbide shelves are usually better.
Advancer Kiln Shelves:
  • Drip as well (granted I have not had first hand experience with them.)
  •  Are cost prohibitive.
  • Can be disastrous when stored in wet areas.

Lisa York Arts Studio Moving to Milwaukee, WI

6/6/2019

Good bye Lyndon, IL Studio.

Picture
Picture
If all goes as planned we will be selling our tiny house in Lyndon, IL and buying a different tiny house in Milwaukee, WI later this month. In the meanwhile, my Uncle is graciously providing us with temporary housing in Wisconsin.

The Lyndon, IL studio will certainly be one of my most memorable studios. The studio took up the majority of the house, and during the winter my electric kiln heated our tiny house up to 90F which was very handy when our furnace broke during below freezing weather conditions.
A lot of blood, sweat, and tears went into our first house. New siding, paint, flooring, trim, doors, electrical updates, lots of accent walls...and more. Whoops...we put a little more time and money than we should have in that house, but who would have known we were only going to be there for such a short time.
Some great ceramics were made in that little house, and lots of memories.

Reasons to Buy Handmade Pottery: Dennis Stark

6/5/2019

Picture
About Dennis:
He is a Studio potter, Community Studio, and Gallery Owner. "I own a lot of pottery from many artists and potters with a few favorites!"

Why do you buy handmade pottery?
"All of the pottery I own is put to use, I have very few non-functional pieces. One of my favorite experiences is to serve a buffet style meal and just have the pottery from several different makers available. It’s fun to watch everyone select what they want to eat off of and what they want to drink from. The meal becomes an experience!"

How did you acquire a Lisa York piece of pottery?
"I got a few of my Lisa York pieces from The Front Porch Gallery at Washington Street Studios in Harpers Ferry, WV, and I got a piece from The Room Show at NCECA in 2018."

Bountiful Wild Flower Bouquet

6/4/2019

3 Benefits of Picking Wild Flowers

Picture

1. Slowing Down

Enjoy a walk in the woods, and pick a flower here and there.
Please abide by the rules whether or not you are allowed to pick flowers in that location.

2. Creative Outlet

Making flower arrangements is a true art form. The more bouquets you make the more of an art decision it is for even selecting the flowers you pick.

3. Cost Effective

These flowers are free. It's a great opportunity to create a bountiful bouquet rather than simply having a dozen or half dozen flowers.
Confession, I don't actually know that much about flowers...yet. Can anyone name these flowers?
I would love to see some of the wild flower bouquet you are putting together. Tag me in a post.
Especially if you are putting those flowers in one of the vases I have made!
